Brooklyn send OF Chris Shortall to Baltimore for OF Ricardo Martinez-

Needs board approval- will process but back out if not approved

Baltimore accepts. We get a guy 4 years younger with a higher upside. We have plenty of cap room to take that risk.

I don't get this trade: basically the expansion team takes on $13.5M in salary for basically the same player that they gave up for $400K. I get the younger part but still...it's 27 vs 31 (not like he's 39 or something...)...

Anyone have thoughts, I try to lean toward approval, but it seems like the taker-on team should have got something additional here...still thinking I guess.

This was offered mid week so I don't remember too much about this guy. But my thought was he was younger and more established. Plus he had the chance to lock him in long term as I offered this around when we first added the expansion teams. Brooklyn will go with whatever the boards decision is.

Shortall is just entering prime while the other guy may start to decline in a season or two. I would make the same trade since he is younger and getting a decent salary.

I approve, I actually lean towards Baltimore getting the better part of the deal by a decent margin. Shortall despite his contract is proven, Martinez isn't. If I was Baltimore I'd be happy if I was Brooklyn I'd have tried adding another player just my 2c

I am happy with this deal.

George is right in saying that they're around the same point right now (star-wise), but Shortall's potential is another .5-1 star higher. And this deal is the reason why I don't like the star system. Shortall has much better gap power, has more home run power, and is a better fielder. If you look at the "soft ratings" he is also more popular and has better intangibles. He'll help me construct a new AHIBA market in Baltimore.

In my opinion, that stuff makes it worth the money.

At the end of the next 2 seasons I would bet that the 2 players will have the same stats (approximately) and the expansion team will pay about $27M and BYD will pay $800K...5 years from now won't matter because BYD will have avoided the cap and have not lost any talent in doing so.

I think it's pointless other than dumping salary for the same player but whatever. I approve.

Approve - this deal seems a little better for Brooklyn than the Brooklyn/LA deal.
